Dangerous Ice – Warning Signs

Fresh Water Warning Signs

– Ice surrounding man-made structures is much thinner

– Clear or “bluish” ice is usually too thin to support the weight of a snowmobile

– Water visible on the ice surface

– Slush

– Holes and cracks 

– Heavy snow on the surface of the ice

– Signs that state “DANGER / THIN ICE”

Ocean Warning Signs

– Areas where “ice-breaking” occurs

– Areas where frozen water is unusual or uncommon

– Areas where strong winds and currents are common

– Flow ice and icebergs

– Warning signs for fresh water can also apply to ocean water!
